+ McCOLLAM GARCONNIERE The residence is located on Ellendale Plantation, the family home. The client, a single male, desired to house himself, his office and guest accommodations in a stone tower (a man’s home is his…”) away from the main house on the family estate. The house is located at the corner of the rectangular lawn surrounding the main house. The lawn is surrounded on 3 sides by hundreds of acres of sugar cane, which is farmed on the plantation grounds. The historical precedent for such a structure on a Louisiana plantation is the Garconniere. This out building housed the teenage male (garcon) so that they could entertain in private. Often the buildings were vertically organized with the sleeping space elevated over an outdoor entry room. The principal residence and the guesthouse, which serves as a gatehouse, are separated and connected by a bridge. The bridge transverses a linear pool that is on axis with a lone Oak tree that stands amidst the endless sea of sugar cane. The cylindrical form of the house is sliced to address the field of sugar cane and allow the attachment of a porch. This component relates the tower in scale to the guesthouse. The tower culminates in the octagonal office at the top that has a 360-degree view of the vast, flat southern Louisiana landscape.
