+ MOFFAT GUESTHOUSE

The main house is located on a knoll in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in southern North Carolina.  The site offers a superb view of the surrounding landscape including an extended vista to the west across uninhabited fields to the mountains beyond.  The guesthouse is to be located down the slope from the main house and along the edge of the site that borders the roadway.  The guesthouse shares the same rural cottage typology as that of the main house with roofs that slope to the front and rear.  Steeper sloped roofs over interior spaces give way to slightly sloped ones over porches.

The service functions (kitchen, bath, closet, and stair) are located in a band along the roadside edge of the property.  The bedroom is on axis with the fireplace, and opens through two large pocket doors to the view of the fireplace and landscape beyond.  A loft sits above the bedroom space under the sloped ceiling.  The wall of the pocket doors is thickened to include storage with shelving for the client’s collection of artifacts on the main level and bookshelves on the loft level.  A wrap around porch and windows extend the boundaries of the living room and make the corner an ideal place for dining or 4-person bridge (as required in the program), or for simply watching the picturesque sunsets that occur over the vast rural landscape.
