+ NIUS RESIDENCE A 1906 Craftsman Period Bungalow is transformed to accommodate a contemporary style of living, wherein use of the private outdoor space of the property is a focus of the lifestyle. When not defined by the walls of adjacent buildings, landscape elements define the boundaries of the property, so that the bungalow resides within a walled private garden. The residence opens to that garden primarily at the rear of the house wherein the procession from indoor to outdoor passes through a series of layers (glass-walled kitchen/dining, porch with skylight, deck with trellis, patio and yard). These layers offer a variety of ways to occupy the space between inside and out (called magical by Charles Moore). Potted plants, located throughout the layers, further blur the distinction between inside and out. Facing the yard at the rear of the house is a tower addition, which has an office on the second floor and a gym on the first (mind/body). The office is accessed from the deck by an alternating tread stair establishing a meaningful separation between office and house. An organic garden on axis with the tower extends the geometry into the landscape and is a focus of the view from both spaces.
