+ BOULET RESIDENCE The residence is proposed for a site on Bayou Lafourche in Southern Louisiana for a couple that presently lives in Hong Kong. It is to be used as a periodic gathering spot for the couple, their three adult children and friends. The new residence opens to the bayou and incorporates a 14-foot high sound wall along the busy highway side. The design is conceived as a series of pavilions linked by a two story screened circulation space. A prototype is the Jim Thompson house on a canal in Bangkok that combines a number of diminutive historic Thai teak houses into a singular residence. The found module utilized here is the typical shotgun house. A parallel exists between these two realms, as the landscape and architecture in Louisiana is similar to that of Southeast Asia. The two story components serve to define outdoor rooms, which, together with the many screened porches, provide ample space for a family who delights in outdoor activities. The masonry courtyards terrace down to the water in a manner similar to colonial precedents the clients visited in Southeast Asia. The concrete plinth together with the rigid steel frame make the house resistant to hurricanes, while the interior of the house is to be surfaced in wood. Naturally ventilated and lit spaces as well as photovoltaic and geothermal systems minimalize the energy consumption. |
