+ GALLERY I/O Gallery I/O is a gallery for the display of “insightful objects”, primarily the jewelry and sculpture of Thomas Mann, the owner. Thomas Mann is an internationally renowned metal artist, and an elaborate monograph documents the evolution of his work over the past few decades. He has copyrighted the term “techno-romantic” to describe his jewelry, which combines lyrical figurative symbols, such as hearts or fish, with a variety of metals and technical components, usually connected by exposed mini-bolts. The gallery is located in the middle of a row of brick party wall buildings on Magazine St., a historic shopping street. The design approach is related to Thomas Mann’s jewelry in composition, material and the shared romance of technology. The three major components of the design are combined to form a jewelry like object that is inserted into the historic space in order to modify it for the program. The connected window display, attendant’s station and mechanical duct are made of differing metals and textures, like Mann’s jewelry, and are shaped by a series of geometric relationships to the context. The duct tapers along its length, as ducts must reduce in order to maintain consistent pressure. The red tip of the duct makes its point by indicating the end portion of the duct that does not distribute air. The black stained and gridded concrete floor has 4’ x 4” aluminum tiles located at the intersections. Friends of the gallery were invited to a party wherein each participant was asked to inscribe an individual design on a tile for the floor, effectively carving their mark into the project.
