+ FRERET STREET RESIDENCE A tornado tore the entire roof off of this craftsman period bungalow, depositing it upside down upon the two-story residence next door. A contractor, Steve Hunicke, called to protect the house with tarps, eventually purchased the remaining structure with the intent of rebuilding it for sale. The new program for the house called for an additional 2 bedrooms and bath to be constructed within the roof space. The residence is sited on a corner lot that is particularly open as it relates to neighboring structures. As well, the corner is oriented to the south so that sunlight enters the house from that direction. The original organization of the house had the private spaces (bedrooms and baths) located along the open street side and the more public spaces adjacent to the neighboring residence. The new organization reverses that relationship with a continuous space connecting living, dining, kitchen (often a public space today) and breakfast areas that takes full advantage of sunlight and views while the master bedroom suite occupies the side adjacent to the neighbor. The original craftsman period bungalow is reinterpreted through a contemporary version of craftsmanship as evidenced by a series of detail flourishes added by the contractor. |
